Welcome to Terry's Thematic Tournaments!

Believe it or not, this is the first time in over 45 years of playing chess - I learned the moves Halloween evening of 1957, and got thoroughly confused - that I've been playing in a thematic event of any kind, let alone organize it. So this should be interesting.

I've chosen to invite you 4 men mostly because I've already become friends with you all in the past 2-3 months. You all are fine, responsible people, and I hope you'll get to know each other as our games proceed.

I chose the Evan's Gambit for our event mostly because I remembered seeing it from time to time in my early years (1960's) of chess study, probably in one of my favorite books at that time, Philip W. Sergeant's Morphy's Games of Chess. However, I don't ever recall actually playing it. At least, I don't have any evidence here in my renewal of chess interest on the internet. So if it's not familiar to you, don't worry, I'm no expert either.

The EG goes like this: 1. e4, e5; 2. Nf3, Nc6; 3. Bc4, Bc5; 4. b4, Bxb4. (See the diagram at the top of this page.) That's how all our games will begin. From that point on, it's all up to you.

Here's how I envision our activity. We'll play a double round-robin -- each person plays every other person 2 games, one as white & one as black. That will mean a total of 8 games per player. See the crosstable below.

The challenging/invitation procedure is very simple: the player(s) whose name(s) appears above yours will initiate the process. This means: I, ttrotter, will invite the 4 of you below me; bdk1, you will invite the 3 below you: cartier24, iamian, & revjake; etc. revjake, you will not have to invite at all. [Note: except for me, I've listed you in alphabetical order, that's all. Okay?]

Oops! After writing the above on 12/30, & testing things now on 12/31, it seems that we can't make 2 challenges to the same person here in GameKnot (unlike another site where I've been playing recently). So, the solution is: everybody invite everybody else, you taking the white pieces each time. Let's see if that works. I recommend that you give the game a name that will help you to distinguish it from other games in your list. I plan to use "EG tmt".

Time limit: set the time limit at 7 days. I can be flexible on this if you folks are agreeable. Regular tournaments here in GameKnot & elsewhere often use as few as 2 or 3 days.

When a game has ended, I would like for both players to drop me a little message, either in our personal game, or the message service that gameknot provides, or via email to either of my 2 addresses - ttrotter3@yahoo.com or ttrotter@telesal.net . I will record the result and update this webpage as quickly as I can, so check here every so often. Two (2) points will be awarded to a win, and one (1) point for a draw. If I make any mistakes, please feel free to point them out.

revjake's full ID is "Reverend Jake", but his wife knows him as "John O'Conner". He's 41 years old, married and has 2 great kids. He and his family live in Virginia, near Washington, D.C.
