What Comes Next?

Sequential thinking is an essential element in one's ability to experience success in various branches of math -- and life, as well. Think of the sequence of steps one employs in the act of getting dressed in the morning to go to school or work: socks first, shoes second (not the other way around).

The three activity sheets in this article are intended to give the elementary student a little introductory experience in sequential thinking with letters in alphabetical order and the counting numbers. They are only meant to be samples of what the classroom teacher can prepare for his/her own students. The possibilities for the patterns are virtually endless, and even some items might have more than one possible logical response.
